Residential Community Philosophy
The Department of Student Housing and Residential Life is committed to providing a quality residence hall curriculum. As a member of the residential community, you have the opportunity to become involved in numerous activities and organizations, meet and become friends with people from diverse backgrounds and enrich your academic pursuits at the university. You will also have the responsibility to be a respectful community member.
The primary challenge of dwelling in a residence hall is learning to live with a wide variety of people. To live cooperatively, residents must have respect for each other and a commitment to specific standards of behavior. These standards are based on respect for the rights of others, self-respect and taking responsibility for one’s behavior.
Every resident has the right to an environment conducive to academic success and personal growth, the right to reasonable privacy and the right to belong to the community. Along with these rights are responsibilities to yourself, roommates, residents of the building and other members of the university community.
The educational, cultural and social programs in the residence halls help you develop personal insight, effective communication skills, the ability to understand and empathize with others, intellectual and academic skills and recreational interests. By living cooperatively in university housing, you can explore the many opportunities available. Life inside and outside the classroom should be a rewarding and enriching experience.
